Thamil
Selvam Perumal
Willing to experiment the routine of a multinational company, after having spent most of his career in the shoe manufacturing industry in Malaysia, Thamil Selvam joined SICPA in 1995. 25 years later, he is still enjoying his work and the challenges he faces daily.
Why did you join SICPA? What convinced you to join SICPA?
SICPA offered me the chance to enjoy a new experience very different from my previous employer. This position was also for me an equivalent of job security that was hard to find in another company. So, I did not hesitate to apply.
What were your previous experiences before joining?
Before joining SICPA, I worked in a Malaysian shoe manufacture. I oversaw many different tasks such as the electrical maintenance, the manufacturing service of the machines, the injection moulding and many more.
Why do you enjoy working at SICPA?
I enjoy working here for different reasons. We face many challenges daily and we always need a lot of flexibility and creativity to be able to overcome them. Moreover, the industry we work in is far from usual which implies that there is no ordinary day.
Another element that makes me appreciate my job is the important part of collaboration that exists. With local team members or colleagues from abroad, we have all the necessary means to work together in the best way.
What did SICPA bring to you professionally and personally?
Professionally, SICPA helped me to grow a lot. Career advancement, improvement in my communication skills at all levels and being in a multicultural work environment are some of the many benefits I have been enjoying for 25 years now.
Personally, I could work on my self-confidence through the challenges encountered and the different jobs I was given. I was also taught to be tolerant towards people around me. Indeed, having a multicultural work environment is great in so many ways, but it can also represent a challenge. People with different backgrounds might react in different ways, which could be confusing when you are not used to it. These same people that I had the chance to meet during my career at SICPA did not only stay as work mates but became real friends as well.
What is your main objective in your job?
My goal is to ensure customer satisfaction and project delivery based on customers' requirements within the agreed timeline.
What are the dimensions you like the most in your job at SICPA?
There are three different dimensions that I particularly like in my job. First, the freedom we have when managing a project - that is, if it stays within the guidelines and policies of the company. Then the cooperation between departments when it comes to delivering a project and finally, the diversity we can find in the workforce giving us the opportunity to learn about different cultures and ethnicities.
In your opinion, what are the key soft skills necessary in your job?
You need to be able to effectively communicate with your colleagues and the customers to ensure effective work and project delivery. You also need to be able to make decisions and be organised in your thoughts and actions. This is the best way to always be efficient and produce the best piece of work you can.
If you had an advice to give to people willing to follow the same path, what would it be?
Anticipate, be persistent and stay humble but especially keep pushing yourself harder!
How do you manage your professional and personal life?
It is important to talk with the family and try to find the right life balance for everyone. As for the professional exchanges, communication is also key when it comes to family.
If you could choose only three words to describe SICPA and your daily life at SICPA, what would they be?
Immense, Revolving, Caring
